Sanshin Accessories

The sanshin, literally meaning "three strings", is an Okinawan instrument consisting of a snake skin-covered body, neck, and three strings. It has been modified from a similar Chinese instrument (the sanxian) that was brought to the island centuries ago and in turn the sanshin became the precursor for the modern shamisen of mainland Japan.

Parts of the sanshin:

chiiga - the wooden body of the sanshin

gen - strings of the sanshin

gen-kake - a threaded piece that holds the strings to the base of the sanshin

sou - the neck of the sanshin

uma - the bridge that holds up the strings of the sanshin

karakui - pegs that tune the sanshin

bachi - the pick placed on the index finger, used to play the sanshin
